Four persons were arrested and cases filed against more than 70 unidentified individuals of Thangammalpuram on the Varushanadu hills on the charge of attacking the police on Tuesday night.

According to the police, an inebriated man disrupted a ‘karagattam’ programme being performed as part of a festival at Sri Kaliamman Temple in the village. Head Constable Krishnaswamy tried to whisk him away. But he quarrelled with the policeman who slapped him in order to control the situation. In a fit of anger, the drunk man and three others attacked the head constable which led to a clash between a group and the police personnel who were on duty.

The police ran for safety. The mob chased the police personnel, including a woman Sub-Inspector, away from their village.

Mr. Krishnaswamy was admitted to Theni Government Medical College Hospital in Andipatti. Special Sub-Inspector John Chelladurai and constable Raja were treated as outpatients.

Superintendent of Police J. Mahesh visited the village.
