Hundreds of CITU men laid siege to the District Labour Welfare Office in RM Colony here on Thursday demanding withdrawal of a new system introduced by the Labour Welfare Board in availing labour benefits.

CITU state vice-president M. Asokan said that the Board had recently advised the labourers to submit their claims individually for availing benefits. Earlier, the unions collected claim forms in bulk and handed them over to the Board. In turn, the Board would send cheques to beneficiaries directly. But the new system would paralyse all activities of the Board, he said and added that it should withdraw the new system. They appealed to the government not to paralyse Labour Welfare Board.
