TIRUPUR: More than 500 activists of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a demonstration opposite Kumaran Square here on Tuesday urging the State Government to re-activate the Labour Department and ensure the implementation of labour laws.
Presiding over the agitation, CITU national secretary A.K. Padmanaban said the union was demanding the DMK Government ever since it had assumed the office to re-activate the department to protect rights of the workers.
Though the Government had announced the formation of various labour welfare boards, it was yet to take steps to appoint enough staff to ensure their implementation, he said. The CITU has been demanding appointment of necessary staff to ensure the announced benefits reach the workers within the timeframe.
