Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch of Custom House, Tuticorin unearthed cartons of cigarettes from the import cargo of biscuits.
According to a statement here on Wednesday, a Chennai-based importer filed the bill of entry for import of biscuits from Singapore. Investigations revealed that the container was stuffed with three types of corrugated cartons containing strawberry, chocolate flavoured biscuits and cigarettes.
Fifty cigarette cartons were found in each of the thirty corrugated boxes.
There were 630 cartons containing cargo biscuits as declared and thirty corrugated boxes brimmed with filter cigarettes. The value of these cigarettes is estimated around Rs. 20 lakh but the duty involved in the concealed cigarettes is Rs.14 lakh.
The value of biscuits declared is just Rs. 1.83 lakh involving a duty of Rs. 80,000 approximately.
The concealments were stuffed in five rows in a twenty feet container. The concealments were seized under Customs Act, 1962. Further is investigation is underway.
