Volunteers of Child Line cell along with labour and police officials rescued a child labourer from K.V.R. Nagar here on Saturday.

Official sources told reporters that M. Pandiaraj (12), a native of Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district and now residing in the city with his mother, was found employed at a grocery outlet at K.V.R.Nagar.

Someone from the locality tipped-off the Child Line cell on the day about the hard labour forced on the boy as well as the physical torture on him by the shop owner.

Child Line cell coordinator Sivaraj Mohan said it was found that the boy had to carry rice sacks from the market to the shop as well as work in the shop from early morning till almost 11 p.m. everyday.

This routine was happening for the last many months and the shop owner had been warned against the act a couple of times by officials concerned on previous occasions, he added.

The boy was now lodged at the special home run by SAVE, an NGO, for the rescued child workers in the city. “Pandiaraj is a school drop out”, Mr. Sivaraj Mohan said.
