A child marriage involving a 16-year-old girl and 22-year-old youth was stopped by the officials from the Department of Social Welfare at Anupparapalayam here on Wednesday.
The marriage between the girl, who discontinued the studies, and the youth, who is a casual labourer in The Nilgiris, was scheduled for December 1. Official sources told The Hindu that the officials at the office of the District Social Welfare officer received the tip-off about the marriage from the girl itself.
An inquiry by the officials revealed that the girl works in a textile unit which meant that she was a child labourer too. However, the officials from the Social Welfare department did not take up the issue of child labour with the departments concerned instead just warned the parents of the girl and the youth against going ahead with the marriage plan and returned.
R. Valliyammal (73), a resident of Anupparpalayam, was relieved of her eight sovereign jewellery while she was standing in front of her house on Tuesday night. Police sources said two people aged around 30 years, who came on a motorcycle, snatched the chain worn by her and escaped. Police are investigating.
