The marriage of a 17-year-old girl that was scheduled to be conducted on Friday was stopped by the Anti-Trafficking Police, Childline 1098 and revenue officials on the eve of the wedding. Those who were part of the team that stopped the marriage told The Hindu that the girl was in her Plus Two and was claimed to be the school topper who is expected to excel in the board exams in March.

The girl, who will be 18 years in a few months was studying in a government school, a few kilometres from the District Collectorate in Namakkal taluk. Her parents claimed that an astrologer told them that their daughter will not get married for three years if her marriage was not performed this year. Upset over what he said they hurriedly arranged for her wedding with a 27-year-old man.

“She was in school when we reached there and was very happy when we told her that we were there to stop her marriage. Her parents assured us that they will not get her married till she was 18 years old and called off the wedding,” they added.
