A child marriage, which was about to be solemnised in the district on Friday morning, was stopped by the district authorities.

According to official sources, Mohammed Ali, a 27-year-old youth of Viswakudi village (Veppanthattai taluk) was about to get married to a girl of Kurumbalur, near here, who is studying Plus Two. She is said to be only 17 years old.

On getting the information, officials led by District Social Welfare Officer K.Pechiammal went to Kurumbalur on Thursday night and enquired the girl. The marriage was also stopped.

Protesting this, the kith and kin of the bridegroom and also the girl staged a demonstration in front of the collectorate on Friday. They demanded that the district administration should enforce the Sharia Law with regard to the marriage.

Collector Darez Ahamed , who held talks with them, told them that getting a girl below 18 years of age into wedlock is illegal and hence cannot be permitted. That was why the district authorities have chosen to prevent the marriage and there was no sense in blaming the officials. He also told them that they are at liberty to move the court in this regard.
