The marriage of a 16-year-old girl with a 25-year-old man of N. Kosavampatti in Namakkal Town, that was to be performed on Thursday morning, was stopped by the Anti Trafficking Wing Police of Namakkal and Tiruchi Districts and Childline 1098 and Revenue officials of Tiruchi District.

According to police sources here, the Anti Trafficking Wing Police got information about the marriage a few days ago.

“The police went to the house of the groom, V. Shanmugaraj (25) and asked them to stop the marriage with the girl who is in her 11th standard. On enquiry they came to know that the girl was living in Vellalapatti, in Musiri Taluk, Tiruchi District,” they added.

Parents advised

Anti Trafficking Wing Police here informed their counterparts in Tiruchi District, following which the Police and Revenue officials went to the girl’s house and advised her parents.

They also got an assurance from the girl’s parents that they will not get her married till she was 18 years old.

The girl was also produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Tiruchi.
