Awards for achievers in various fields

CHENNAI: Chief Justice of the Madras High Court A.P. Shah on Saturday distributed awards to a wide array of achievers in different fields chosen by the Mylapore Academy during its 53rd annual prize distribution here on Saturday.

Dr. Shah handed over the award for the best social worker to Thara Srinivasan, Director, SCARF, for her committed service to the mentally ill. Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran received the award on behalf of the varsity and S. Lakshmanan, General Manager, Indian Bank, and R. Asokan, Assistant General Manager, Canara Bank, received the award on behalf of their organisations.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Shah said compassion to humanity was a quality that everyone should possess. Prof. Ramachandran said the Academy enjoyed the trust of the people. N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, said Mylapore Academy was founded by visionaries and its tasks were being carried out by a dedicated band of staff members.

Academy chairperson Sarojini Varadappan, honorary treasurer S. Krishnamurthy and honorary secretary C.S. Veeraraghavan spoke.
