VILLUPURAM: Chief Justice of Madras High Court Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale inaugurated the Munsif Court at Sankarapuram, about 75 km from here, on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion he said that it was the first court to be opened by him after becoming Chief Justice. About 13,000 cases pertaining to the region were pending and the setting up of the court here would help in their speedy disposal. (Earlier, Sankarapuram residents used to go to Kallakurichi court situated 22 km away).

The Chief Justice said not only the High Court but the subordinate courts in the State were functioning well. However, besides the public interest litigations plethora of cases filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act added to the pendency.

Since the people looked at the Judiciary with the great expectations speedy and less expensive justice should be delivered to them, he said.

High Court Judge M.Jayapal, who is also the Portfolio Judge of Villupuram district, said before resorting to court boycott the lawyers could air their grievances either to him or to the District Judge.

District Judge C.Chinnappan, District Collector R.Palanisamy, Deputy Inspector General of Police Masanamuthu, and, Sankarapuram Bar Association president S.M.Saravanan also spoke.
