As Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s camp has been sulking over allocation of berth in the team of office-bearers of the State unit, the Congress high command on Sunday made some of his loyalists as presidents for four districts.
According to a press release from Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi, Mr. Chezhian is the president of the Congress unit in Namakkal.
A. Venkatachalam has been appointed president of the Tirupur rural in the place of P. Gopi.
R.C. Babu is the new president of Tiruchi South district unit, replacing Suba Somu.
Former Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation ‘Karate’ R. Thiagarajan has replaced R.K. Venkat as president of the South Chennai district unit.
All those who lost their posts are supporters of former TNCC president K.V. Thangkabalu.
Only on December 7, the Congress high command re-constituted the team of office-bearers for the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee after a gap of 10 years.
The new appointees included 17 vice-presidents, 29 general secretaries, a treasurer, an executive committee of 43 members and 54 district presidents.
B.S. Gnanadesikan was re-nominated as the State president.
As the team was dominated by loyalists of Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan, the camp of Mr. Chidambaram even boycotted a meeting of the office-bearers a week ago.
Expressing happiness over the new appointments, a leader close to Mr. Chidambaram said his camp was expecting some more changes in the party organisation in the coming days.
