CUDDALORE: Referring to the Sunday incident in the Natarajar temple at Chidambaram, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the authorities to ensure freedom of worship, according to S.Dhanasekaran, district secretary of the party.

In a statement here, Mr. Dhanasekaran stated that every individual had the right to offer worship in the language of his or her choice and those acting as a stumbling block in this respect should be sternly dealt with.

Had the authorities taken proper action soon after the issue of the order by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department (permitting Arumugha Samy to sing the Tamil hymns in the temple) the bitter happenings would have been averted.

Mr. Dhanasekaran called upon Collector Rajendra Ratnoo to inaugurate, in the presence of all-party leaders and democratic organisations, the regular recitation of verses from the Thevaram and the Thiruvasagam in the temple.

He also demanded a thorough inquiry into the incident (in which the Dikshithars roughed up the police and later the supporters of Arumugha Samy pelted stones at the police) and take appropriate action.
