The third edition of the Chennai Marathon, organised in aid of GiveLife charity, will be held on August 29. The theme of the marathon this year will be ‘My city, My pride’.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, Member of Parliament Kanimozhi said the main aim of the marathon was to raise enough funds to help build a better future for children being supported by GiveLife charity.

More than one lakh people are expected to participate in the seven-km open category ‘I love Chennai run,’ and around 8,000 registered participants are expected to take part in the 21-km half-marathon.

Referring to the campaign theme, she said, “Having pride in one’s city means contributing towards creating more green spaces, help in improving the quality of life of every resident and in preserving the city’s architectural heritage.”

According to her, the city loses a part of itself every time an important monument is demolished to make way for something else. Greater efforts must be made in the sphere of preservation, she added.

Mayor M.Subramanian said Victoria Public Hall would be reopened after the ongoing renovation work, which was expected to take six months. More than Rs.1.5 crore had been spent on a light and sound show complex on the ground floor of the public hall.

He added that the Corporation would start offering free yoga classes between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the yoga arenas developed in 20 parks in the city.

In connection with the marathon, free training sessions for interested runners would be organised on the Marina beach every day at 5.45 a.m., except on Mondays.
