PUDUKOTTAI: Members of the Pudukottai District Farmers Federation and the Pudukottai District Fishermen Federation took out a procession here on Monday, in support of their three-point charter of demands.

Raising slogans, they marched down from the Public Office campus to the Collectorate where they submitted a memorandum to the District Revenue Officer, R. Mahendravel.

They urged the Central and state governments to check the growing trend of inflation, ‘causing an unprecedented fiscal burden’ to the farming and fishing communities.

They also pleaded for uninterrupted power supply to agricultural pump sets. They wanted the restoration of the Parliamentary constituency status to Pudukottai district.

The president of the Pudukottai District Farmers Federation, Sengol Udayar led the procession. The president of the Pudukottai District Fishermen Federation, Pazhanisamy, who spoke on the occasion, said that inflation had left the fishing community in the lurch.

The district secretaries of the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) S.P. Muthukumaran and Chinadurai respectively; progressive farmers, Appavu Balandar and Sivasamy were among those who participated.
