While overseas business tours and visit of foreign delegates to the city are common because of the profile of the industries here, industrial associations in Coimbatore have been taking additional efforts during the last few months to highlight the strengths of Coimbatore in foreign countries.
In July this year, two delegations of industry owners from Coimbatore visited Japan.
Last month, the Bangladesh High Commissioner addressed the trade and industry here. On October 8 and 9, the Italian Ambassador was in Coimbatore.
“The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is focusing on branding Coimbatore. Our theme this year is brand Coimbatore. That is the main objective for organising meetings with overseas representatives and visiting industries abroad,” says R.R. Balasundharam, president of the Chamber.
More people abroad need to know about Coimbatore. The chamber is planning a trip to China in April next year to visit some industries, the export-import fair and meet the members of the industry associations there. It is also considering a visit to Sri Lanka.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner has invited a delegation from Coimbatore to visit Bangladesh. And, a Japanese delegation is expected to visit Coimbatore in two months to meet the industry owners here.
Following the visit of the Italian Ambassador, the proposal for twining of Coimbatore with an Italian city is likely to be firmed up, he says.
There are still many who do not know the potential of Coimbatore.
Similarly, industry here needs to have exposure to the technologies, opportunities, and new markets abroad. The Chamber is planning to constitute a committee for international business.
While there are several delegations coming to Coimbatore directly, most of these are for a specific sector.
The Chamber is looking at general events that will create awareness about all segments of the industry here.
Economic slowdown in other countries is now encouraging the trade and industry there to look at new centres in India for business and investment.
Hence, they want to explore cities such as Coimbatore, he says.
