: An unidentified person snatched a 10-sovereign chain from a 50-year-old woman, Rajajayanthi, at Sonai Karuppasamy Koil Street on Tuesday evening.

The culprit also stabbed a passer-by who tried to nab him before escaping from the scene at around 4 p.m., the police said.

When the victim, a resident of Animuthu Pillayarkoil Street, was walking, the culprit standing on the street, pounced on her and pulled the gold chain.

The woman fell down. P. Murugan (43), who was passing her by, gave a chase and tried to stop him.

However, the accused stabbed him in his abdomen and then escaped in a two-wheeler.

Murugan has been admitted to a private hospital.
