: A woman, who was riding her two-wheeler near Melur, lost her gold chain, when a trio chased her on another two-wheeler and snatched the booty after threatening her with an ‘aruval' on Monday.

Madurai Rural Police said that Asai Ponnu (38) wife of Palpandi, of Jothi Nagar, Melur, was riding her two-wheeler towards Thumbaipatti to attend a function. She was accompanied by her relative Pothum Ponnu. As they were nearing Thumbaipatti, three persons on a two-wheeler hit her vehicle and she fell down. In the melee, one youth brandished an ‘aruval' and forced the woman to part with her gold chain weighing three sovereigns. Within a few seconds, the robbers fled from the scene. Melur police are on the look out for the robbers.

Killed by lightning

Lightning claimed the life of Rasathi (51), wife of Muthu of Sanampatti village, near Vadipatti on Monday. Police said that when the woman was returning home in the evening, she was struck by a lightning.
