A winner in the village panchayat elections in Erode district has been forced to wait anxiously for six days to collect his certificate of election as officials have inadvertently given it to the runner-up.

In the elections held for Ward 6 of Nanjai Gobi village panchayat, Vadivelu secured 151 votes defeating Gopal, who got 108 votes.

Mr. Vadivelu left the counting centre after officials asked him to collect the certificate of election from the Block Development Office on October 22.

Record

To his dismay, Mr. Vadivelu found the records claiming that the certificate was given to Gopal. Mr. Vadivelu took up the matter with Collector V.K. Shanmugam by submitting a petition during the public grievances redress meeting held on October 24.

The Collector instructed the officials to look into it and initiate action against those responsible for the act.

Mr. Gopal handed over the certificate to officials on Tuesday, bringing an end to the issue.

Later, Vadivelu collected his certificate of election from officials on Thursday.
