“On the issue of protecting fishermen”

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday criticised the Centre for adopting double standard when it came to protecting fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

In a statement, he said he was pained to note that the Centre had acted swiftly in arresting two Italian marines for killing two fishermen from Kerala, while it adopted a “soft stand” with regard to recurring attacks by Sri Lankan Navy on fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

He urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to follow the example shown by her Kerala counterpart Oommen Chandy to save the lives of fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

He criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government for not providing relief measures to the drought-stricken people of the State even though relief measures were announced two months ago.

He complained that the government had not given adequate attention to the problem of drinking water shortage being experienced by 11 districts, including Salem.
