: A team of teachers belonging to the Sarva Shisksya Abiyan (Educational for All) started the annual census of dropouts throughout the district on Wednesday.
According to SSA sources, there are Agastheeswaram, Thovalai, Rajakkamanglam, Kurunthencode, Thuckalay, Thiruvattar, Killiyur, Munchirai and Melpuram unions.
The census programme was inaugurated by Chief Educational Officer of SSA Senthivel Murughan at Parakkimkal.
Later, speaking to presspersons he said that the dropout census would be carried out for 10 days and dropouts would be given basic education by voluntary organisations for three months. They would be enrolled in regular classes later.
Steps had already been taken to admit the dropouts to the residential schools, if their parents would give their permission.
Last year, 283 dropouts were identified and they had been admitted to the nearest schools, according to the CEO.
