Celebrations on sober note

Republic Day celebrations in cyclone Thane-affected Cuddalore and Villupuram districts were held on a sober note on Thursday.

Cuddalore Collector Rajendra Ratnoo unfurled the Tricolour in the presence of Superintendent of Police P.Pakalavan at Anna Stadium. After honouring the freedom-fighters, the Collector disbursed relief amounting to Rs 2 lakh to 10 cyclone-hit fishermen and Rs 51,750 towards crop loss to 10 farmers.

In all, the Collector gave away aid worth over Rs 41.27 lakh to 183 beneficiaries. Attending the Kadampuliyur Gram Sabha meeting as an observer,

Mr Ratnoo said the relief and rehabilitation measures in the cyclone affected areas were going on a war-footing.

A total of 45,000 electrical poles and 57,000 electric bulbs had been procured for replacement of the damaged ones.Villupuram

Collector V.Sampath hoisted the National Flag at the police training grounds in the integrated Collectorate complex in Villupuram on Thursday. He gave away Chief Minister's Police Medals to 43 personnel and welfare aid worth Rs 19 lakh to 179 beneficiaries.

As many as 3,000 students from nine schools staged cultural programmes. Gram Sabha meetings were organised in all 1,109 panchayats in the district.
