TIRUCHI: A team of Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating into five suspected cases of bogus motor vehicle accident claims in Tiruchi.
The team from Chennai is currently scrutinising records at the National Insurance Company's branch office near Cantonment. The cases pertain to accidents reported in 2001 in the limits of Tiruverambur, Lalgudi, Cantonment, Jeeyapuram and Ramji Nagar police stations in Tiruchi district.
The compensation amount claimed was about Rs.2 lakh in each case. The registration number of the vehicles, cited in the cases, has been found to be the same.
The investigations are based on the orders of the Madras High Court on a writ petition filed by the insurance companies seeking a CBI probe into suspected cases of fake insurance claims.
The CBI has already investigated similar cases in a few other places in the State including Coimbatore, Salem and Namakkal. The investigation in Tiruchi is expected to go on for the next few days.
