A total of 21,557 persons have undergone cataract operations through the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS) and non-governmental organisations between April 2011 and October 2013, said Collector S. Nagarajan.

According to him, the DBCS has been functioning in the district from 1994. The district administration had conducted 178 eye screening camps between January to October in the current year in different parts of the district.

A total of 22,478 persons has undergone screening during the camps and among them, 1,449 were diagnosed with cataract and suggested operations to rectify the problem.

Moreover, between April 2011 and March 2012, a total of 7,013 people underwent cataract surgeries. Likewise, between April 2012 and March 2013, a total of 8,984 people underwent cataract operations and between April and October this year, the operation was done on 5,560 persons.
