Tiruvannamalai: Casual election to vacant local body posts in Tamil Nadu will be conducted in February 2010, Tamil Nadu State Election Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran said.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Chandrasekaran said that he had enquired with Anappathur panchayat board member Nalini at the Collectorate, as the panchayat adopted a resolution to remove her as a member following her absence in three consecutive panchayat board meetings.

“Normally, State Election Commission conducts casual elections to fill vacant local body posts in the State, once in six months.

“Now, casual elections will be conducted in the February to local body posts which are vacant as on December 31, 2009. Electronic voting machines will be used for urban local bodies and ballot papers for rural local bodies.

Electronic voting machines

“Government has made amendment for using electronic voting machines in all local body polls. So, to conduct 2011 local body election fully with the help of EVMs, we would require 25,000 EVMs as against 7,395 machines we possess now. We expect the government to sanction funds for purchasing required number of EVMs,” he said.
