One of the ticket counters at Tambaram railway station was broken open and Rs. 61,000 collected through sales of suburban tickets was stolen in the early hours of Wednesday.

A little past midnight, the collection made after 6 p.m. on Tuesday was tallied. The staff members on duty at the East Tambaram counter were unable to pass on details of the collections over the dedicated telephone line due to a technical snag. Hence, they walked to the West Tambaram counter. They returned after an hour to find the wooden door of the counter broken open and the cash stolen. Railway Protection Force personnel are looking at video footage from their surveillance system.

Earlier, the collections made after each shift would be taken with police protection. Southern Railway sources said ticket booking clerks, especially women, faced a number of risks working during late hours.
