COIMBATORE: Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Friday announced a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh to the Signal and Telecommunications Workshop at Podanur in recognition of its efficiency and productivity.
Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the workshop, he said signal and telecommunication was vital to train operations, and thanks to the efficient and effective signal and communication equipment, the utilisation of line capacity improved manifold, helping the Railways run more trains within the available lines.
Mr.Velu said the workshop had made a significant progress in cost-effective productivity that enabled it to meet the local demand.
A signalling equipment that was earlier imported for Rs. 50,000 was being made at Rs. 2, 440 at the workshop. The Minister said a Rs. 68-lakh community hall would be constructed at Podanur for railway employees, and a Rs. 3.75-crore renovation would involve extension of referral hospital facility for the employees .
The retired and oldest employees of the workshop were honoured by the Minister and Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra.
Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan appealed to the Minister to halt some trains at Coimbatore North and Podanur so that Coimbatore Junction could be decongested.
