: A former vice-chairman of Virudhunagar Municipality has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court Bench here challenging a Government Order issued on September 12 reserving the post of the Municipality Chairman for women candidates during the elections to be held this year.

Against rules

The petitioner S. Balakrishnasamy claimed that reserving the post for women was against the rule that reservations must be rotated among municipalities every 10 years.

He said the Virudhunagar Municipality was reserved for women between 1996 and 2006.

He sought to quash an amendment made to the Tamil Nadu Panchayats and Municipalities and Corporations (Delimitation of Wards or Divisions and Reservation) Rules, 1996 through two government orders, one passed on September 7 and another on September 12.

When the case came up for hearing before Justice P. Jyothimani on Wednesday, he directed the Registry to post the matter before a Division Bench of Justices P.P.S. Janarthana Raja and Aruna Jagadeesan, who were seized of a similar case related to seven municipalities in Tirunelveli district, on Thursday.
