The District Crime Branch has registered cheating case against five women, including J.G. Lakshmi, secretary of Pengal Membattu Maiyyam, Aruppukottai, for cheating members of self-help groups for women by availing loans to the tune of Rs. 24.32 lakh on their behalf without their knowledge.

Based on the complaint of Project Officer-Mahalir Thittam G. Gurunathan, the case was registered under various Sections of Indian Penal Code — for cheating, forgery impersonation, creating false documents and misappropriation.

The secretary and four coordinators had allegedly taken photocopies of documents from the SHG members without their knowledge and submitted the same to get loan from two banks in the name of the SHG members, Sub-Inspector A.L. Hyder Ali said.

Only when the bank sent notices to the SHGs for non repayment of loan dues did the SHG members came to know about the cheating.

No arrest has been made.
