Handling of cargo at the Chennai airport’s cargo terminal in Meenambakkam has been affected over the last few days due to a ‘go slow strike’ by a section of employees of the private company in charge of the terminal.

According to sources, the airport receives nearly 25 cargo aircraft daily and handles 515 tonnes of cargo.

Since Monday, nearly 900 tonnes of cargo has not been cleared.

H.S. Suresh, Airport Director, Chennai airport, said the workers had raised an “unreasonable demand” for a hike in wages. Mr. Suresh said that if the situation did not improve, the receipt of cargo might have to be suspended.

Representatives of Bhadra, the company handling the cargo, said talks were held with the section of agitating workers.

Only half a dozen workers were indulging in this kind of activity. The issue would be taken to the Assistant Labour Commissioner on Thursday, they said.
