Complainant said he also forced her to undergo abortion

CHENNAI: The caretaker of a home for women and children in Velur village at Minjur was arrested on Saturday on charges of raping a girl and forcing her to undergo abortion.

Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur district, M.C. Sarangan, said that the arrest followed a complaint from a former inmate of Sathyam Charitable Trust that caretaker Sadhu Immanuel (60) had raped her during her stay there.

According to the police, the victim managed to escape from the home and lodged a complaint.

The Kattur police have registered cases under Section 376, 312 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(4) of the Tamil Nadu Women Harassment Act.

Mr. Sarangan said other inmates of the orphanage had been rescued and handed over to the Social Welfare Department.

“A special team with its members drawn from the Social Welfare and Revenue Departments and the police has been formed to inspect and regulate activities in all such homes in the district.”
