For 11 Assembly constituencies in Tirunelveli district
TIRUNELVELI: A total of 167 candidates filed their nominations for 11 Assembly constituencies in the district, comprising two reserved segments, on Thursday.
A total of 12 candidates each for Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur and Cheranmahadevi constituencies, 11 each for Kadayanallur and Alangulam, 15 each for Tenkasi and Nanguneri, 19 for Palayamkottai, 20 two for Tirunelveli, 18 for Ambasamudram and 20 for Radhapuram submitted their nominations.
Accompanied by Congress cadres and the district general secretary of the party, rebel Congress candidate for Kadayanallur constituency, the 66-year-old P.S. Pandian, elder brother of the former Speaker, P.H. Pandian, filed his nomination with the Additional Personal Assistant (Lands) to Collector, Ramachandran.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for the same constituency, U. Kamaludeen, also filed his nomination with Mr. Ramachandran.
Speaking to reporters after filing the nomination, Mr. Pandian, who suffered a defeat at the hands of his younger brother and the AIADMK candidate, P.H. Pandian, in the Cheranmahadevi constituency in the 1984 Assembly polls, said that underground drainage scheme would be implemented at Kadayanallur within a stipulated period and protected drinking water in adequate quantity provided to all villages in the constituency.
The AIADMK candidate for the Radhapuram Assembly segment, L. Gnanapunitha, and 13 other contenders filed their nomination paper with the Assistant Commissioner (Land Reforms), T. Azeez Ahmed, while the party candidate for Nanguneri constituency, S.P. Suryakumar, submitted his nomination with the District Supplies Officer, Suresh Kumar. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam candidates Manthiramurthy (for Tirunelveli constituency), Ponraj (Ambasamudram), Rajendranath (Cheranmahadevi), Khaleel Rahman (Palayamkottai), Packiyaraj (Nanguneri), Sivananainthaperumal (Radhapuram) the All India Forward Bloc candidates Shankar (Nanguneri), Babu (Vasudevanallur) and Independents Krishnakumar (Palayamkottai) and Esakki (Nanguneri) also filed their nominations.
