Collector Rajendra Ratnoo has referred to the Omandurar Super Specialty Hospital, Chennai, 17-year-old Sakthivel who is suffering from an advanced stage of cancer in the food pipe. The youth had submitted a petition to the Collector on Wednesday, pleading for mercy killing.

Sakthivel, son of a daily wage labourer and resident of New Tiruvalam Road, Tharapadavedu, Vellore, had said in his petition that he was suffering from cancer in the food pipe and doctors at all major hospitals he approached had pleaded inability to treat him on the grounds that he was suffering from a rare cancer and it was in an advanced stage.

He first went to Arignar Anna Government Cancer Hospital, Kancheepuram, where he was asked to go to a government hospital in Chennai. He later went to Government Stanley Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. Since doctors there pleaded inability to treat him, he returned to Vellore and consulted doctors in Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai, but in vain.

Sakthivel, therefore, pleaded with the Collector to subject him to mercy killing as he was “closer to death and dying every moment.”

Mr. Ratnoo told The Hindu that he has referred Sakthivel to the Omandurar Super Specialty Hospital, Chennai.

“I have spoken to the nodal officer in the hospital to arrange for treatment to him. Sakthivel is already on the way to the hospital where a medical team is ready to receive him and take care of him,” he said.
