Hind Mazdoor Sabha members stage demonstration

“Government should release Rs. 1,000 crore as subsidy to the SETC to save it from severe financial crunch”

TIRUNELVELI: Members of Hind Mazdoor Sabha of Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation staged a demonstration in front of their depot on South Bypass Road in Vannarpettai at Palayamkottai on Saturday pressing various demands, including cancellation of route permits given to omni and mini buses.

The protestors, led by the president of HMS, Tirunelveli branch, T. Arasappan, said that the Government should immediately release a sum of Rs. 1,000 crore as subsidy to the SETC to save it from the present severe financial crunch.

Besides giving up the Government’s move to privatise the public transport corporations in a phased manner, the government should immediately cancel the route permits given to the mini and omni buses, “which badly affect the revenue of the government transport corporations,” they said.

Pension on a par with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board or State Government Employees should be introduced and appointments on compassionate grounds be given to the wards of the SETC workers who die in harness.

Alternative or easy work should be given to the workers, who have recently undergone surgeries or are under intensive medication.

Medical assistance

The assistance of Rs. 1 lakh being given for surgeries relating to cardiac ailments should be increased to Rs. 2 lakh. The practice of cancellation of driving license in case of accidents should be withdrawn immediately and the drivers involved in the accident released on bail without any delay.

Office-bearers of the association, G. Samy, and P. Subramaniam, the Tirunelveli district secretary of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, N. Subbiah, and SRMU Tirunelveli president, K. Karuppiah, spoke.
