The Canara Bank conducted a financial inclusion campaign in as many as 10 unbanked and under-banked villages, falling under Coimbatore circle, on Saturday, in an attempt to ensure that every house hold in the respective areas had an access to banking facilities.
Canara Bank chief manager P.R. Yeshodhar told reporters that the campaign was aimed at helping the vulnerable groups such as weaker sections and low income groups, who were till now excluded from even the most basic services provided by the financial sector, to make and receive payments.
“It provides the poor from the villages where no full-fledged bank branches operate, with opportunities to build savings, obtain credit and make investments,” he said.
The bank's Perumanallur branch opened 700 no-frill accounts in Ettiveerampalayam village on the day to attain financial inclusion in the said village.
“We have deployed a business correspondent in the village to collect and make payments from the account holders and will be soon issuing biometric smart cards to all those who had opened the accounts,” Mr. Yeshodhar said.
Following is the list of nine villages other than Ettiveerampalayam where the financial inclusion campaign was held on Saturday, with the branch involved in the activity given in the bracket: Ponnapuram (Dharapuram); Mathur (Velli Tirupur); Gettisamudram (Anthiyur); Puthupalayam (Thekkalur); Vellapalayam (Gobichettipalayam); Moongilpatti (Sakthinagar); Mambady (Davanaickenpatti); Murungatholuvu (Chennimalai) and T. Poonthurai (Arachalur).
The Canara Bank, which is also the Lead Bank for Tirupur district, according to Mr. Yeshodhar, had completed financial inclusion in Pongupalayam, Perumanallur, Neruparichal, Kanakkamplayam and Kalipalayam villages under Avinashi block in the district, during the previous phase of financial inclusion campaign.
