Candidates busy in door-to-door canvassing in municipal areas

Thanjavur: The campaign for local body polls has touched a feverish pitch in the district.

With only three more days left for the first phase of polling on October 13, campaign has reached its peak on Monday.

Most of the candidates are involved in door-to-door canvassing in municipal areas like Thanjavur, Pattukottai and Kumbakonam.

In rural areas, candidates travel in open jeeps with convoy of two-wheelers, cycles and campaign for the election.

For Thanjavur municipal elections, the DMK and the AIADMK have locked horns in 32 wards, while Congress is pitted against the AIADMK in ten wards.

The MDMK and the DMK clash in seven wards.

The CPI is contesting against the AIADMK in one ward and the CPI(M) against the AIADMK in another ward.

In the last council, while the DMK contested alone and won in 31 wards and captured power, the AIADMK had 13 councillors, Congress four, MDMK one and CPI(M) one.

The total number of voters in the municipal area is 1,48,982. A total of 215 candidates are in the fray for the municipal election.


In Kumbakonam municipal area, out of 45 wards, the DMK is contesting in 25 wards, the Congress in 14 and the PMK in six.

The CPI and the CPI(M) are contesting independently (breaking from the DMK alliance as seats were not allotted to them) in four wards.

The AIADMK is contesting in 37 wards, the Movendar Munnetra Kazhagam in two wards and the MDMK in six wards.
