158 students from two educational districts take part
PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 158 Scouts and Guides from Pudukottai and Aranthangi education districts participated in the three-day special camp to select the Scouts and Guides for the State Governor’s Award held at the Nizam Oriental Arabic Higher Secondary School here.
Chief Educational Officer and District Scouts Chief Commissioner S. Sellam inaugurated the camp.
Both the Scouts and Guides had to take part in ten competitions, including a written test, and they have to score a minimum of six points of the maximum ten in each of the competitions to get selected for the award.
Tying knots; setting up tents in the rural secluded areas on their own; explaining the nine Laws of the Scouts Movement; their knowledge of the motto, National Anthem, pledge, etc were the tests conducted. The successful candidates would get the Governor’s Award from Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at a function at Chennai.
District Educational Officers M. Madevan Pillai (Pudukottai) and P. Sukumar Devadoss (Aranthangi in-charge); District Secretary of the Scouts and Guides, V. Gunaseelan (Pudukottai) and R. Tamil Mani (Aranthangi), explained the concept of the competitions to the participants.
Selvakannu from Thanjavur and C. Stella Santhappan from Kanyakumari were the chief selectors for the Scouts and Guides respectively.
At the end of the camp, Mrs. Sellam held a discussion with the teachers in-charge of the Scouts and Guides units on the steps to be taken to further develop the movement in the schools.
District president of Scouts and president of District Chamber of Commerce Seenu Chellappa and Headmaster of Nizam Oriental School M. S. Haja Mohideen felicitated the Scouts and Guidesat the valediction.
