Camp to make them ‘almost normal'

As many as 72 mentally retarded persons were brought to the special medical camp conducted by the district administration here on Wednesday.

This is the first such camp organised by the administration to rehabilitate the mentally retarded people roaming in the streets and main thoroughfares in the Krishnagiri town and elsewhere.

The camp was inaugurated by the District Revenue Officer P. Prabhakar at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Krishnagiri.

C. Manimaran, District Differently-abled Welfare Officer, told The Hindu the mentally retarded persons were brought to the camp by the volunteers in ambulances. Of this, 24 were identified as mentally retarded and the rest of them had other ailments.

Four to five persons were violent for a while. Later, they become quite and cooperated for the screening.

Twenty-six persons were immediately issued National Identity Card for the Differently-abled persons.

Hair cut, shaving was done to the mentally retarded persons. They were also given a bathe at the camp.

Thirty persons were referred to the Government Headquarters Hospital for further treatment. Eleven persons were referred to the Government Hospital for mentally retarded at Kilpauk in Chennai, seven were sent to Home for the Mentally Retarded persons in Salem.

The next camp will be held at Municipal Middle School, behind the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Hosur on Thursday, Mr. Manimaran said.
