More than 15% of urban Indian children are obese, according to estimates by the World Health Organisation, said Ridhi Dasgupta, Senior Endocrinological Assistant of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Speaking at a public meeting organised by the department in connection with World Diabetes Day here recently, Dr. Dasgupta said that according to the WHO estimates, a mind-boggling 40 million children under the age of five are overweight.

“When you find that 1.2 billion individuals are obese throughout the world as against 800 million who are malnourished, you realise it is time to act,” he said.

It is not a mere coincidence that the day also happens to be Children’s Day. “It is the responsibility of each one of us to unite in this fight against diabetes, pledge to strike at the roots of the condition and prevent its dreadful complications,” he said.
