With sex-related crimes against women rising sharply in various parts of the country, employees of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and the Life Insurance Corporation of India, members of the mercantile community, school and college students joined hands to stage a demonstration opposite the BSNL office in Coonoor on Friday.

They lit candles and expressed anguish over the sorry state of affairs. They demanded effective steps to protect women.

Addressing the gathering, the president, Coonoor Merchants Association, R. Parameswaran said that concerted efforts should be made to ensure the safety of women.

The president, Bearhatty Panchayat, Rajeshwari Devadass said that only through a change in mindset can an end be put to the incidents like the gang-rape in Delhi.

Such incidents also highlight the need for women to become bold.

Programmes to enhance awareness about such crimes among various sections of the society should be conducted regularly.
