ERODE: Union Government has been urged to declare textile industry a labour-intensive sector.

The demand was made a meeting Ka. Marappan, chairman, Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council, M.S. Mathivanan, convenor, export promotion panel, PDEXCIL, and Sakthivel, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations, had with officials of Commerce Ministry.

Facilities

A release from Mr. Mathivanas office says such declaration will help the textile industry avail of more facilities from the Government.

He also suggested that textile clusters like Ichchalkaranji, Bhiwandi, Malegoan in Maharashtra and Komarapalayam, Erode and Somanur in Tamil Nadu be declared Towns of Excellence so as to enable setting up of common facilities like computer-aided design centre, textile training centres and taking up of marketing promotion activities.

On behalf of PDEXCIL, Mr. Marappan submitted a list of demands, which includes inclusion to home furnishing sector under the Market-Linked Focus Product Scheme of the Government to promote home furnishing industry.
