Prevalence of diabetes is alarming and there is a need for qualified people to treat diabetes, Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman and Managing Director, Kovai Medical Center and Hospital said here on Friday.

The 10th branch of Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC) was inaugurated on Avinashi Road on Friday.

New methods

Mr. Palaniswami called upon the doctors to create awareness on diabetes among people. Mr. Palaniswami said that new methods of treatments are available for treating type 2 diabetes. He added that diabetes is prevalent both in rural and urban areas and 30 per cent of the population are prone to diabetes.

Inaugurating the Coimbatore Branch, K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan said that Coimbatore is known for hospitality and health care with many specialised hospitals that focus on quality service. He added that Mr. Mohan's institute focuses on diversified activities and has an impressive growth record. He acclaimed Mr. Mohan that in the midst of commercialisation taking place, he was focussing on quality and not just expansion.

V. Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director of Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC) said the centre aims to provide quality treatment with exclusive eye department, a specialised diabetic foot clinic, a radiology unit with X-ray and patient education unit.

He added that the centres have already treated 2.4 lakh patients in the past 20 years. R.M. Anjana, Joint Managing Director and Consultant Diabetologist, DMDSC, Ranjit Unnikrishnan, Vice Chairman and Consultant Diabetologist, DMDSC, D. Ramamurthy, Chairman, The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, J. Giri, Chief Diabetologist, K.G. Hospital and Post Graduate Medical Institute, Coimbatore also spoke.
