Tuticorin: The byelection to various local bodies was held peacefully in the district on Wednesday. The polling percentage stood at 47.6 per cent in the elections held to select one councillor to the Kayalpattinam third grade municipality, from ward VII.
Meanwhile, 64.4 per cent of the total voters exercised their franchise to designate the ward members to seven village panchayats.
Village panchayat-wise, 82.6 per cent of polling was registered at Keezha Vallanadu (ward 2), 53.57 at Karunkadal (ward 4), 65.7 at Nangaimozhi (ward 3), 71 at Padukkapathu (ward 3), 64.6 at Ezhuvaraimukki (ward 3), 52.2 at Keezha Eral (ward 1), 64.5 at Theethampatti and 65.61 at Kulathur (ward 2).
The police provided extra security cover to the polling station at P.U. Primary School at Seetharkulam, where the polling was held to select a ward member to Keezha Vallanadu village panchayat, owing to the ‘sensitiveness.’
The counting of the votes for the elections held to various village panchayats would be held at the respective Block Offices on September 7. Likewise, the counting of ballots in the polls held to select a councillor to Kayalpattinam third grade municipality would be held at the municipal office itself on the same date.
