The State Transport Corporation’s bus terminal, formerly Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation, remain unused for the last 10 years on Kitchipalayam Main Road here.

The bus stand, inaugurated in September 11, 1966, served as a terminal for buses belonging to Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation Limited that was renamed as State Express Transport Corporation. After the inauguration of New Bus Stand, the premises remain closed as bushes and thorns surround the area and the building currently.

“The place is turning out to be a safe haven for anti-social elements during night hours as few consume alcohol and roam around the area,” a shopkeeper said. Garbage, building debris were dumped by the shopkeepers and residents as the place near the Old Bus Stand remains unused.

An autorickshaw driver said that the bus stand, once very busy though out the day, remain idle leaving the building to be in a deplorable condition. He said that the place could be used for housing offices or serves the needs of the people. “An idle building and vacant land in the vicinity is wastage of resources,” he added. After establishing the new bus stand on Omalur Main Road, buses were diverted leaving the premises to be idle. Hence the public demand usage of the building by the transport department.

Sources in the transport department said that there is a proposal to lease the premises for government offices and efforts would be taken to utilise it.
