Eight passengers suffered injuries
Three persons – two women and a seven-year-old girl – were crushed to death when the concrete ceiling of a bus shelter at Puthampur near here caved in after a State Transport Corporation bus rammed into it on Sunday.
According to police sources, the bus proceeding to Uppiliyakudi from Pudukottai went out of control and rammed into the shelter when one of its front tyres exploded.
The shelter collapsed, crushing Panchavarnam (45), wife of Rajendran of Karambakudi village, Kaleeswari (45), wife of Aranthangi of Duraiyarasapuram village, and seven-year-old Zeenath Begum, daughter of Mohamed Basha of Puthampur, to death.
Eight more persons waiting near the bus stop also suffered injuries, and were admitted to the government headquarters hospital here.
Tamil Chandran, Superintendent of Police, visited the spot.
Tirugokarnam police have registered a case and are on the lookout for bus driver Krishnan.
