Burglars broke into a locked house in Maruti Nagar in Madambakkam near Tambaram on Sunday and decamped with Rs. 15 lakh in cash, while sparing a huge quantity of gold jewels.
The house, on Maruti Nagar Fourth Street, belongs to Faisal (48), who works in the Gulf as a driver. On Sunday morning, his wife Reema along with their son and daughter locked the house and went to Washermanpet to attend a wedding. While the wife and daughter stayed back, son Shahid returned home.
He reached the Tambaram railway station around 10 p.m. and called his friend, also a resident of Maruti Nagar, who brought Shahid home on his scooter. When Shahid entered the house after a chat with his friend, he heard some noises inside. Alarmed, he called his friend. They noticed the grille gate and wooden door on the side entrance broken open. The huge amount of cash, wrapped in a piece of cloth and kept on top of an almirah, was missing. However, gold jewellery weighing 40 sovereigns, kept alongside the cash, was left untouched.
Shahid, with the help of his friend's father, informed Selaiyur police about the burglary. Fingerprints were lifted from the house, police said, adding that special teams were investigating.
The family is said to have received the cash after selling their property and was to use it for the wedding of their daughter scheduled for March. According to police, the burglars had cut pieces of lime and placed them in each of the rooms along with vermillion (kungumam).
