Burglars broke into a row of shops on Poonamallee High Road opposite the Nazarathpet police station, early on Saturday, and stole over Rs. 42,000.

Five locked shops including a hardware store, a battery servicing centre, a two-wheeler mechanic shed and a sticker shop were targeted.

The incident came to light around 8.30 a.m. on Saturday when the hardware shop owner, Santhanakrishnan while opening the shop found the front shutter lock broken and Rs. 10,000 missing from the cashbox.

Meanwhile, Ramakrishnan, owner of the battery servicing shop came to his shop and realised it had been broken into and Rs. 32,000 stolen.

The burglars had not stolen anything from the other three shops, sources said.
