DINDIGUL: Two masked-burglars who entered a farmhouse near the Annamalaiyar Mills Colony Junction at Pillayarnatham murdered a woman and injured her husband.

The police said the burglars, in a fit of anger, threw Subbulakshmi (65) and her husband Narayanaswamy alias Chinnappan (70) into a well near their thatched house on Tuesday midnight and escaped.

While Subbulakshmi drowned, Narayanaswamy had managed to float. On seeing him floating, they assaulted him repeatedly with stones. On Wednesday morning, milkman, who came to his house to collect milk from the farm, saw Narayanaswamy floating and alerted the locals.

Later, they admitted him to the Dindigul Government Hospital. Their neighbours said unidentified persons had already stolen gold jewels from Subbulakshmi some months ago. The Superintendent of Police, A. Pari, conducted an enquiry.

Sniffer dogs and finger print experts were pressed into service.
