Traffic at Villianur was thrown out of gear following a road blockade by members of bullock cart owners’ association on Wednesday.

They were protesting the seizure of four carts on charges of illegal mining and transporting sand without permission.

On hearing about the action taken by taluk officials, members of the assocation, who were on relay fast here for the last two days, thronged the taluk office at Villianur with a large number of bullock carts.

They insisted that the seized carts be released. Police pacified the agitators. Bullock cart owners and workers have been demanding the territorial administration to create sand quarry in Sankaraparani and Pennaiyaru to legalise the transportation of sand by cart owners in Puducherry.
