The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing arrested, on graft charges, a building inspector of Nagapattinam Municipality here on Wednesday.

The arrest of Selvaraj(47) was made after a trap was laid on the basis of a complaint filed by P.Karthi, a civil engineer and proprietor of a private constructions firm.

The complainant had applied for a plan approval with the Municipal Commissioner on behalf of his client for a house construction, a legal fee was also paid towards the formalities.

While the plan approval and orders were issued by the Municipal Commissioner, the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs.5, 000.

Following this, the complainant had recorded a telephone conversation with the accused, where he attempted at negotiating the bribe.

With the recorded conversation, a complaint was filed with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing, and a trap was laid.

On Wednesday afternoon, the accused was caught red handed while accepting the naphthalene coated cash, and the arrest was carried out by a team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police K.Manickavaasagam.

The accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Nagapattinam for remand.
